by Chris O'Grady
A machine-gunning in an L.A. freeway ramp at two in the morning failed to kill its intended victim, who escaped over an impossibly high ramp wall, but it did whack the cab driver, and he was the one insurance adjuster Sam Riker's insurer covered. That is why Sam starts digging. His search leads him to a big-time operator around town named Stanley Manlius and the various people who are satellites around men like him, as well as some out-of-town hitters hired by men like Manlius, but only when it is absolutely necessary. If Sam didn't already know it, he quickly learns that some of the nicest, most beautiful people can do the damnedest things.
