by E. Nesbit
Note: This memoir was serialised intermittently in The Girl's Own Paper from October 1896 to September 1897. The installments (which were of differing lengths) have been merged into this single ebook but the text is otherwise unchanged. There were inconsistencies in the original layout; some articles began with decorative letters or a subsidiary title, others omitted them, some sections omitted To Be Continued at the end. In part III a "guimpe" is a variant spelling of "wimple". The word "asseverated" used in part XII is not a misprint, it is a now-obsolete expression meaning "to assert or aver".
Nesbit's experiences in France in parts IV onwards, and the dream described in part VIII, seem an obvious inspiration for chapter VI of The Phoenix and the Carpet . Parts X onward seem a likely source for Five Children and It.
